Mohan Raghavan researches and teaches at the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the broad area of computational neuroscience and motor systems in particular. He is part of the BharatGen consortium – a consortium of academic researchers working on India specific Generative –AI technologies and solutions for Bharat. Mohan is the founding Head of the Department of Heritage Science and Technology at IIT Hyderabad, a unique interdisciplinary department that seeks to use science and technology to serve heritage industries and professionals. His research at this department revolves around data science and systems design for Heritage experience systems and digital Yoga studios. He has a keen interest in the mechanistic basis of Yoga and Ayurveda from a perspective of physiology. He is particularly focused on compiling and curating Heritage databases of tangible and intangible Heritage assets. He researches on curation, mathematical analysis and visualization of a broad range of Indic Heritage – tangible and intangible.
He has recently co-authored a textbook on Elements of Indic Knowledge Systems and Heritage – a book of first principles for researchers in IKS and Heritage areas. He was founder and Co-Head of the Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship at IIT Hyderabad from 2015-18 where his work centered around bringing together academic research, design thinking methodologies and healthcare technology for benefit of society at large. He has mentored several startups in the area of healthcare. He has been a post-doctoral fellow at National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore and holds a PhD in the area of computational neuroscience from IISc, Bangalore. Prior to entering academics, he spent 7 years at Motorola, where he was part of the team that developed the world’s first 3G mobile phone. Over the last 20 years, he has given numerous lectures in English and Kannada and conducted workshops on the Elements of Indic Knowledge Systems and Heritage. He has delivered several invited lectures on the scientific aspects of Indian culture. He has contributed numerous articles to web journals and writes regularly in regional newspapers (Kannada). He explores symbolic digital art on Indic themes and occasionally writes short fiction that deal with cultural themes embedded in a contemporary context.
